IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REGARDING SURGERY AND RHINOPLASTY

How do I choose a rhinoplasty surgeon?

Research carefully before deciding which rhinoplasty surgeon will manage your nasal issues. Your satisfaction with the results of your Rhinoplasty surgery will depend on the technical expertise and in many cases the artistic skill of the plastic surgeon you select. You also want to find someone with whom you are comfortable and who regularly achieves good results performing the surgery you seek.

You should be able to view pictures of patients treated by your surgeon either on their website or in the office. You may also be able to discuss surgery with patients who have already been treated. Often your family doctor may offer advice.

Be sure to check a cosmetic surgeon’s credentials. They should be trained in Facial Plastic Surgery or General Plastic Surgery and be certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Many Canadian surgeons are also American Board certified, including Dr Bartlett who is a diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

You may check a facial plastic surgeons’ board status at www.abfprs.org (American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

If I choose rhinoplasty surgery, will I need a general anesthetic?

Rhinoplasty can be performed either under sedation with local anesthetic or a full general anesthetic. With sedation you are relaxed and almost sleeping throughout the procedure. With longer cases you may be more comfortable having it performed under general anesthetic. This can be decided at the time of your consultation.

What is the ideal age to have rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty can be considered at any age once the nose has fully grown, as early as the age of 15 in certain patients.
