First impressions count. That’s why more and more men are choosing cosmetic surgery. They want their looks to be an outward reflection of the way they feel inside. Your motivation to have cosmetic surgery may be because you sense you look older or more tired than you feel, to have an impact on your career, or personal life, or the very reasonable desire to simply look your best.
Thankfully, there are a variety of safe surgical procedures to help you put your ‘best face forward’. Whether you are considering rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), chin augmentation, or facial rejuvenation surgery, Dr. Bartlett will help you make the right decision: with up-to-date information, sensible advice, and a thorough discussion of the options available to give you the renewed appearance you desire.
Although procedures are similar for men and women, there are often cases where a modification must be made to achieve the best result in a male patient. Some elements of the male anatomy, such as the male facial hair pattern will influence the technique in facelift or other surgeries in order to achieve the desired result. Dr Bartlett’s expertise and knowledge of these specific issues in male surgery help you achieve the results you are looking for.
What is Facial Rejuvenation?
Facial Rejuvenation may consist of just one procedure, or a combination of surgical techniques working in harmony to create a more youthful appearance overall. The common procedures are facelift, necklift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Dr. Bartlett also offers non-surgical methods, which are discussed in more detail in the Non-Surgical Techniques section of the website. When performing any of these techniques, Dr. Bartlett’s goal is to provide his patients with a natural, refreshed appearance. The intent is to deliver natural looking, effective improvements, avoiding a clearly ‘post-surgical’ change in appearance.
In addition to the medical and surgical training common to all physicians, Dr. Bartlett has also attained a fellowship and certification from the American Board of Facial and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and has completed extensive specialized training in Switzerland, Italy and the U.S. He has a wealth of experience in the most effective procedures for facial rejuvenation and a thorough understanding of the important differences in cosmetic surgery for men and women. Signs of aging, such as jowls, sagging skin in the mid-facial area, and excessive wrinkles, can all be addressed through facial cosmetic surgery. The medical term for a facelift is rhytidectomy. This refers to a procedure where the excess skin of the face is removed and a deeper layer of stronger tissue, referred to as the SMAS, is tightened. In certain cases, men may have a more limited procedure referred to as necklift. An important trend to note is the move towards having the procedures done at an earlier age. Not only does it seem to be that the benefits appear to last longer, the change in appearance is less pronounced. A typical facelift will usually result in an appearance 5 to 7 younger than your actual age. Common Questions About Facelift
Your eyes may be your most important facial feature. Delivering a positive impression with reassuring eye contact is one of the most crucial aspects of our business and social interactions. Consider the wealth of expressions we commonly use to indicate positive traits –“Bright-eyed”, “He looked me in the eye”, “Seeing is believing.” Clearly, the ‘eyes’ have it.
The scientific term for eyelid surgery is blepharoplasty. This encompasses the various techniques used to remove excess skin, muscle, and fatty tissue from either (or both) the upper and lower eyelids. It’s a relatively simple procedure, but it can offer dramatic results. Baggy, puffy eyes can make us look unhappy, angry, or tired. Through blepharoplasty, you can ensure your face projects a vigorous, youthful, and welcoming appearance. Blepharoplasty surgery is a sensible option to consider for anyone unhappy with their eyelids and wanting to generate positive, trustworthy feelings when people look at them. Eyelid surgery is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, for a more complete facial rejuvenation.
Common Questions About Eyelid Surgery
The size and shape of your nose can be the defining factor in your appearance. Age, injury, or inherited traits are common reasons you might be unhappy with your nose and leave you wanting to make changes. With rhinoplasty, you can adjust the size, shape, and profile of your nose, ensuring its proportions suit the rest of your face. After a comprehensive discussion of your needs, Dr. Bartlett uses computer imaging to provide you with a realistic preview of what to expect. Even minor adjustments will often deliver significant positive changes to your appearance.
Many patients also incorporate chin augmentation procedures with rhinoplasty, enhancing their appearance with a balanced, proportionate, harmonious profile.
Common Questions About Rhinoplasty
A strong jaw line is an enormous asset to a man. The negative connotations of a weak chin are well known. Chin augmentation can be a stand-alone procedure, or done in conjunction with other rejuvenation techniques such as rhinoplasty. Whichever methods you choose, the goal is to create a handsome, symmetrical profile that delivers a sense of confidence, both for the individual and also in others’ perception of you.
There are two typical methods of improving the chin profile. You can have an appropriately sized and shaped implant inserted, or through liposuction, the fatty tissue around the chin and neckline can be removed, giving your existing profile a stronger, more pronounced appearance. The two procedures may be combined and require very little time to perform
How A Chin Augmentation Is Done
Perhaps the most common characteristic that can be addressed through facial plastic surgery is prominent ears. Children with prominent ears are often teased and although it is ideal to perform the surgery in early childhood, most people don’t have surgery until later.
Men of all ages undergo this procedure every year as it is straightforward and has a dramatic impact on appearance. By adjusting the amount of cartilage behind the ear, it is reshaped and repositioned closer to the skull. Evidence of the procedure is almost invisible. The surgery occurs behind the ear and any scars are usually faint, and hidden by the ear crease and/or hair. Otoplasty usually takes less than 2 hours to complete and recovery is 1 week. The results however, last a lifetime and can deliver a dramatic boost to self-image and confidence.

In addition to cosmetic surgery, men also have a number of non-surgical options to consider when seeking facial rejuvenation, including the use of Botox, Restylane and Artesense. These procedures are performed in minutes in the office and patients may return to work or other activities immediately afterwards.
Botox has become the most popular cosmetic treatment in North America… and for good reason. The simple non-surgical procedure takes just minutes, the product is thoroughly tested and manufactured to strict quality control standards, and the results are lasting and effective. Over two million people in North America have taken advantage of the benefits of Botox and it has been licensed for use in Canada for nearly twenty years. Botox is an ideal solution for the ‘dynamic’ wrinkles caused by frowning, squinting, and the effects of accumulated facial movements that accrue as we age. Patient’s with crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines are all ideal candidates for Botox. Dr. Bartlett’s skill and experience in administering the treatment will ensure you enjoy effective natural-looking results.
Restylane®
Similar to a collagen injection, but longer lasting, Restylane softens wrinkles, adds volume and is ideal for creating full, well-defined lips or adding volume to sunken cheeks. Made from hyaluronic acid, a natural occurring substance present in the human body, Restylane works for up to six months or more, maintaining tissue volume, and creating a smooth, fresh look for your face. The procedure takes just minutes and results are immediately visible. While the results are long-lasting, they are not permanent. This means you can adjust your appearance over time and find the look that is most pleasing to you.
Artesense®
Used as a filler to smooth out facial lines and contours, and for lip augmentation, Artesense is a semi-permanent solution to these issues. More long lasting than treatments such as Botox or Restylane, but still a non-surgical procedure, Artesense is a collagen paste containing microscopic particles of a bio-safe, inert substance called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). PMMA has been used for decades for other applications such as dental work, and orthopedic applications such as bone repair and hip replacements. The treatment is a two-stage process. A first injection allows the body to surround the PMMA beads with its own collagen fibers. A follow-up treatment about four months later delivers long-term results that typically last for years.
