Laser Surgery

What is skin resurfacing and how does it work?

How is it done? All techniques – from more traditional chemical peels and facial sanding (dermabrasion) to the latest laser treatments – involve resurfacing the skin. In essence the surface layer of the skin (epithelium) is removed exposing the underlying dermis. This stimulates ingrowth of new collagen which tightens and smoothes the skin.

How do I prepare for Surgery?

Before surgery, Dr Bartlett will recommend a skin cream regimen starting two weeks before the laser procedure to condition the skin for optimum results. Antibiotics and antiviral medications are started the day before the surgery and will be taken for up to one week after the procedure to minimize the chance of infection.

What should I expect after surgery?

You should expect considerable swelling but most patients report only mild discomfort. You will be given detailed instructions about caring for the freshly resurfaced skin.

Your face will appear quite red for the first week or two. Then new, pink skin that is smoother and finer begins to emerge. Although you see the changes of smoother skin within 10 days , there is ongoing improvement in skin appearance over the first few months. It takes several months for all the redness to fade completely, but makeup may be used to camouflage it after a week or so.

When can I return to work?

Most people return to work after 10 days to two weeks.
