ArteSense®

ArteSense® is a different class of filler than Restylane.  Restylane is temporary lasting up to six months whereas ArteSense® is considered a semi-permanent filler that may last for years.  ArteSense® is useful for correcting nasolabial folds or other facial lines and contours as well as for lip augmentation.  As with other fillers, the results are harmonious with other facial features and therefore the results look very natural.

How does ArteSense® work?

ArteSense® is comprised of microscopic beads of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) embedded in a collagen paste to allow for injection through a fine needle.  A trace of anesthetic is added to the solution to help dull any discomfort during the injections.  As the collagen is absorbed by your body over 3–4 months, new collagen fibers  produced by your own body surround these beads , partially restoring the volume of collagen that is absorbed.  Approximately four months later,  patients undergo a second injection to obtain long term results that may last for years.  With ongoing aging, patients may require subsequent injections several years after these initial two injections.

What is PMMA?

PMMA is an inert substance that has been implanted in the body for nearly a century in other applications such as ocular lenses, dental work, bone repair, and artificial hips.  It is a proven and safe biocompatible substance.

Is ArteSense® safe?

Extremely.  ArteSense® has been used in Canada for almost a decade and longer in Europe.  Over 400,000 patients worldwide have been safely treated.

Will ArteSense® hurt?

There is minimal discomfort is certain injection sites such as the nasolabial folds but for lip augmentation a local anesthetic is usually used.

How much ArteSense® do I need?

More than one syringe or treatment may be required to achieve the results that you desire.  The area to be augmented and your body’s response dictate the amount of ArteSense® required.

How long does ArteSense® last?

Once you have achieved the desired results with the initial injection series, results with ArteSense® have been shown to last 10 years or longer,.  Although the microspheres  are permanent, new lines or wrinkles may develop as the aging process continues.

What should I expect after ArteSense® treatment?

You should expect moderate swelling for 24-48 hours for lip augmentation, less so with other injection sites.  Make up can be applied immediately after injection.

It is important to limit  the amount of movement in the area injected as much as possible for the first 48 – 72 hours.(eg minimize smoking and/or drinking from a straw)

The ArteSense® implant may feel somewhat hard at first, however, it will soften over time.  The implant acts to stimulate your body to produce new collagen to surround each microsphere.  The complete effect of the implant may therefore be apparent for up to three to four months.  After the swelling has gone down, there is a possibility of your wrinkles returning temporarily after a few week.  This is normal , and they should start to disappear again over the next few months.
