IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REGARDING FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY
How do I choose a plastic surgeon?
Research carefully before deciding which plastic surgeon will manage your facial issues. Your satisfaction with the results will depend on the technical expertise and in many cases the artistic skill of the plastic surgeon you select. You also want to find someone with whom you are comfortable and who regularly achieves good results performing the surgery you seek.
You should be able to view pictures of patients treated by your surgeon either on their web site or in the office. You may also be able to discuss surgery with patients who have already been treated. Often your family doctor may offer advice.
Be sure to check a cosmetic surgeon’s credentials. They should be trained in Facial Plastic Surgery or General Plastic Surgery and be certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Many Canadian surgeons are also American Board certified, including Dr Bartlett who is a diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
You may check a facial plastic surgeons’ board status at www.abfprs.org (American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
Not all facial treatments are surgical – Why should I choose a facial plastic surgeon?
Not all physicians doing non-surgical treatments such as Botox® or fillers such as Restylane® are surgeons. Although these medical treatments are helpful in many patients , they may not be the most appropriate or effective treatment for many issues. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr Bartlett can offer the most appropriate surgical or non-surgical treatment for your facial concerns.
If I choose plastic surgery, will I need a general anesthetic?
Almost all facial plastic surgery is done with local anesthesia in combination with sedation. The advantage to this approach is that you are relaxed and almost sleeping throughout the procedure, yet the side effects and risks of a general anesthetic are avoided.
What is the ideal age to have facial cosmetic surgery?
As people age differently, there is no precise age at which cosmetic surgery is done. Dr. Bartlett will discuss with you the optimal plan to manage your facial concerns at any age. This may involve surgical or non-surgical treatments.
Many people wonder what is the ideal age for Rhinoplasty (cosmetic nasal surgery). This surgery can be considered when the nose has almost fully grown (age 15 -18).
